Most M5/E-34 under 100k in mileage will be more than the spending range you mentioned--not all, but most.

On the other hand, I figured a good reasonably mileaged 540i in the years you mentioned, but be well into the 20s.

I think the M5 will holds its value a little more, it's truely more of high performance ride.

Drive them both--I assume you have driven the 540 and see what you like.

ion: Questions that are probably frequently asked inside (did my best with search, but had to post):

I've been looking at E34 540i's for a little while, and am just about ready to buy. However, a thought occurred to me earlier today -- why not at least look at an M5? I had never really looked before because I had heard a couple people say that the 540i actually has better acceleration because of the V8, but this doesn't sound right for an M car. I know I am asking a biased crowd, but the M5 must be quicker -- and better;) --, no? Additionally, I was prepared to spend about 15-18k on a clean 94-95 540i -- if I were to raise my sights to the M5, what kind of a price difference would I see? Also, I would not have to worry about the Nikasil issue, right? I'm just looking for some advice, if anyone has any to offer.
