Nobody's Fool:

Ah, you did not mention the auction bit at the outset!

I know a lot of people in the Atlanta Area who go to auctions here and get the prices you describe. However, those prices are not available to the general public. You are absolutely right under the condtions you describe though. Just yesterday I dined with a friend who has a mint $10k Caddy Seville and $4k Nissan Pathfinder.

He chose to keep and not sell those cars, but I have not doubt the price to the general public would have been a good bit higher. Depending on how you look at it, you may or may not consider that a rip-off.

I hear the same stories from a friend of mine who works at a salvage yard and buys cars at auctions.

As for getting ripped off, that is relative. When I buy a used car that loses $1k value/year that I own it I think I do OK. I think the guys who buy new cars and sell them after 2 years of fat payments for just about what they owe on them are getting ripped off. An auction person would think both of us were getting ripped off and whoever puts these cars in the auction probably thinks the guys at the auction are getting ripped off.

It is the same in the auto industry in manufacturing. The same parts we make for $30 sell for $300 at the dealer.

Read my post again - MY car was/is tops - I would not have paid $14k but the dealer knew I had a thing for bimmers - I buy all his decent ones and run them through the auction. I am not joking or provoking - I am speaking from experience - DONT GET RIPPED! - I lost alot of money when I started because I thought like you - the truth is people lie - "M cars" are just that "CARS"! I love them but they arent made of gold -- finding someone to pay a mint price for one is like hitting the lottery - it rarely happens
