Short shifter options (e.g. M Roadster, etc.)? (archive)

Any suggestions on using BMW OE parts from another vehicle as a short shifter improvment? I'm looking for shorter throws and a little shorter shifter height and this seems to be a very economical route. I have heard mixed responses about e34 M5s with an M Roadster shifter. Curious as to what you all have done and/or heard.

P.S. I'm guessing it makes sense to change the bushings in the shifter mechanism at the time of upgrade.
