Worth noting is that the E34 came with two clutches. The 1991 one was quite stiff. The 1992-93 was the upgraded one. I have driven a new clutch that was well installed by Gary Derian (also on this board) and it was as light as a Honda on his 1991 M5.
The E28 clutch is supposed to have some sort of helper spring I am told (no direct experience) and this might have been bad. The one I drove also had a too-stiff clutch. Just one of the things that got sorted out on the E34.

Well, I drove an E28 yesterday and it was a blast! Clutch was *very* stiff though, making me think it might need replacing soon. I have to find someone in New England with an E34 to compare the two.
Thanks again,

Drive both and see what you want. I like the E28 quite a bit with the Euro bumpers, but got the E34 as I like the body shape more and the better fit and finish and ergonomics of the interior.
