Generally use the recommended fluid dictated by the colored dot next to your trans filler plug. Otherwise, BMW service bulletin suggests the thicker 80-90 weight gears oils to Redline MTL to DINO ATF. Each trans will react differently to each fluid.

However most owners are using dino ATF, as there is something in synthetic ATF that is NOT compatible with the Getrag.

The bulletin says if one fluid doesn't work or is too noisy, etc. - try another. But don't expect immediate changes, as some owners report it may take hundreds to a couple thousand miles, before the full effects of the fluid change are felt.
