Looking to buy an M5, what year? (archive)

Within the next month I will begin my pursuit of looking for a new car. I am replacing a 96 328i. I have been looking at the E34 535's or 540's and even the E39's. I've been hooked on the material that I've read about the E34 M5s. What's the best model year to buy?
I'm looking at spending less than 26k for a low mileaged (under 60k) M5, maybe a 93. Is this possible? I'm figuring if I was going to spend that amount on another 5 series, why not get a little older M5 and have a permanent smile when I step behind the wheel.
This will be a secondary car, used only on the weekends and maybe once during the work week.
Were ellipsoid headlights and heated seats standard?
