I guess I could always try the Dinan chip for the regular 540i Automatic (is that a 5 speed automatic..?) Any problems expected?) and then take up DINAN on the satisfaction guaranteed warranty?

Dinan could answer that... I thinkg the 540i chip would work fine -- I don't think there is a difference between the 'sport' and the regular 540i when it comes to tranny/engine. I think the sport differentiation is the suspension, brakes, and trim. BUT, I'm not 540i Sport expert, by any stetch.

Perhaps I should try other chip manufacturers (other than DINAN). Any ideas?

I happily use the D'Sylva chip in my M5. Mark may be able to do a chip for your car... I'd email him with your questions.
