I was cruising around Newport beach (Jamboree) where on any given day you will see dozens of M5s, 911s, CLK430 AMGs, etc. I noticed by chance what appeared to be a late model E36 body style 525 with an //M badge on the rear. Did BMW ever make such a thing (a 6-cyl //M5) or did someone get creative?I live in this area and drive an E34 M5. I think you may have your chassis numbering off. The E36 is the older 3-series body, where as the E34 is the older 5-series body.
So, to answer your question (I think), yes. There are approx. 1800-2000 E34 M5s in the US. This could have been one, or this could have been a "badge tuned" version. :)
While I see tons of E39 M5s in our area:

I see far fewer E34 M5s:
