While it is entirely possible to get a fully-legal 3.8L into the US, a lot more work and background research is required to make this happen than is generally known. Make sure you have all the paperwork and find out what paperwork you need to have.

I decided to go the 3.6L route and have never regretted it. However, I recently drove a 3.8L about 700 miles and it is the superior car by quite a bit largely due to the mid-range torque. Much easier to use as a daily driver than the 3.6L. Well worth it if you can do it, IMHO.

I am looking for a clean M5 - Did the US versions ever come in with the 3.8L engine? - I would like to have this engine if possible. I currently have a '94 540 Blue / Blk, will trade for M5.
