What are best (summer) tires under $170 each? (archive)

I'm running stock wheels on my '91 M5 and need new rubber all around .... Car is driven sometimes in rain, so any make or model tire that excels on dry pavement at the expense of wet traction would probably not be the best....looking for long tread life..Prefer tires that aren't so delicate that freeway construction zones make them susceptible to bumping out of balance, thanks in advance,,,Damian.
