Depending on what you change, $750 is a good price. The sprockets are $100 each or so and the chain is $30 with the guides about $10-20 each. So, you're looking at $500 in parts alone.

You need a special tool to do this so your cost would be $600 or so. I would give it to the $750 guy!

Oops! I learned of this when I called Fields BMW here in Chicago. Incidently, I first called Perillo--the only dealer actually located in the city--and they quoted me 750.00.

The S38 does not have a timing belt. It uses a chain and tensioner system that doesn't need replacement until well past 100K or more.
