Low speed noise (archive)

I have just got my first BMW. A 97 328 Touring. Motoring has just got interesting again. Its done 90K miles and has 225/50 16 Toyo Proxes T1-S tyres. The fronts have 6mm, the rears 2.5mm (and will be replaced very soon).
There is a noise on some road surfaces that is quite loud, it seems to be from the front. I suspect that it is tyre noise. Does anybody have any experience of these tyres. I thought that maybe some of the front suspension joints may be worn and are amplifying normal tyre noise. I have had the car jacked up and can't detect any play by pulling on the tyre, both top to bottom and side to side. The selling garage says that it is normal tyre noise but they would wouldn't they (as Mandy Rice Davies said).
Any input will be gratefully received.
