You did not say what year/model/engine type....but E36 318i produced from 8/94 to 12/95 have a problem with the O2 wiring harness being installed incorrectly during production....where due to the movement between the body....transmission and exhaust system, the wires may strech and break over time.

I replaced my O2 sensor with one from dealer for $120. A lot of the after market units (although cheaper) do not come complete with the connector (and need to be spliced in).
