Help needed on stainless exhaust (archive)

I have an E36 and I live in England. I have ordered a stainless exhaust piece. I have been told that to keep the car passing its MOT, I can only put the stainless exhaust on from the catalytic converter back. Could someone please tell me if this will only be one piece or will I need two pieces as it is currently quite expensive and I need advice. The shop is saying that it will only be one piece. My BMW is a 325i. Thanks
