Experts needed quickly -- warranty expires in June. My 1996 318 has had clutch/trans/shifting problems since 12k (currently has 37k). The various messages tell me I'm not the only one with a dealer who won't acknowledge common problems (2 diifferent dealers/12+ visits). They almost had me believing it was my imagination.

At almost full engagement (pedal fully released)I get a very slight but distinct clutch chatter. Unlike the other postings, mine occurs very infrequently (hasn't happened in over a month) and only when cold (in the mornings, but weather doesn't seem to make a difference). Initially only happened in reverse backing out of the driveway but lately also happens when pulling away in first gear. Never had the problem after the first block or at any other time.

Without going into a lot of detail, the trans was replaced around 13k after repeatedly popping out of first gear (from dead stops). Chatter started after new trans was installed. Clutch has been replaced (can't remember which problem this was in response to). Regional service tech got involved and had the dealer pull the new trans and inspect trans, clutch, etc. Also after new trans, shifter became very notchy from first to second (I can live with this but it shifted great before).

This is my first bimmer but can't imagine this is the norm. I'm hoping that all the years of experience out there can shed some light on this problem. I'd like to have it corrected before the warranty runs out. If not, should I be worried that the thing will dump a clutch or trans fairly soon and I'll have to pick up the tab? I usually keep my cars for 80-120k -- regular maintenance and no problems. I love the car otherwise, but will trade it now if I'm likely to have big repair bills in my future. Thanks for everyone's time.
