I recently put bilstein Heavy Duty shocks on my 94, didn't change springs. Others on this board prefer an even stiffer setup, but I think the ride is almost unpleasantly forgiving over bumps[bad roads here], and the result makes me wish I had considered the stock sport suspension. [The engineers at bmw have a little experience in suspension design.] You might even find a used stock sport setup on this board.
Putting on eibach sway bars was a pleasant surprise - eliminated most of the body roll when cornering, a bigger improvement than I expected. That would be my first move.
I decided against 17" wheels because of concerns about ride compromise and tramlining; the car wasn't designed with them in mind. I put on a set of bmw 16" wheels with 225/50/16 michelins off this board. Some improvement in ride - they soak up the bumps a bit - but even at 16" there is more steering pull than stock, tho not bad. [I note that the sticker on the driver's side door says 225/55/16 is the size comparable to stock, not 225/50, but I haven't checked to see if that matters to the speedo.]
My .02; email me if you want. Enjoy.
