94 325's have fewer bugs, are recommended good used cars to buy according consumer reports 93 was the first E36 325 model year for the sedan, 94 was the first convertible 325 E36 . 318's are more troublesome, from what I have read, and were discontinued, in part, due to a Neon being able to beat them at a light, with the Neon $15,000 less expensive. This was according to an auto writer. The 325 puts out 190HP, and with under $1000 for an M3 exhaust, performance chip , and K and N filtercharger, can put out about 200-210HP. Much better then a new 323 even. Still get 20-30 mpg. < 20 is Heavy foot city and highway vs 30 highway driving -easy>
The service II is about $600, but the valves are self adjusting, the timing chain is metal, and the longevity is said to be good.
Look on cars.com for countrywide newspaper ads, or check with bmwcca clubs for pampered cars owners are selling.(Usually under duress!)
Good luck
