Should my tach behave this way? (archive)

When I am driving at about 75mph and I let off on the gas, my tach moves up to 3100rpm from around 2900rpm. I thought that it should decrease since I let off on the accelator.
WTF? Should it do this? It seems to drive fine.
1997 328is AUTO.
