I have a 1993 318i. I got in the car this morning and the car would not start. I noticed as I was cranking the the car that the tach was going CRAZY. when I would stop cranking the car the tach would jump all the way past the redline position to the straight down postion and all around. So I disconnected the battery to allow the computer to reset and tried to start the car again. Still cranked didn't start, however the tach needle no longer jumped.
First I tried to do the self-diagnostics test by pressing the accelerator to the floor five times with the key in the start position. I have done this before to check codes but this time it didn't work at all. I am wondering if it is because I unhooked and rehooked the battery. I also tried to do the instrument cluster self-diagnostics test but it didn't work either.

Second- I tested the main relay and the fuel pump relay. They were both good.

Third- I checked the Crnkshaft Position Sensor. The Sensor is supposed to read 1280 ohms +-10% mine read 520 ohms. I also checked the camshaft position sensor and it read 1280 ohms. So tomorrow I am buying a new Crankshaft Position Sensor and hopefully that will alleviate the problem.

However I am still stumped at why the self diagnostics test show no code at all. Not even the all clear code. Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Shawn Luther
