However, they make up for it at higher RPM's. When do they begin to make up for the power loss? It all depends on the engine, and how "free flow" the system is. In case of the 5th gen Prelude, the engine became a slug from 0 to about 2,500RPM's, after that it was wicked. Dunno what it would be on bimmers.
Take the muffler off, and you'll see a dramatic loss of torque at lower RPM's, but it will fly at higher. The noise will be something else.
Good systems will try to balance the loss, and that is why it's important (unless you're at the race track) to look carefully at the dyno numbers.
