In Reply to: E36 Power Convertible Top, Problem?? posted by Randall on June 25, 2000 at 21:50:17:

: I would appreciate hearing from E36 convertible owners who have the power top. Is it reliable? I am negotiating to buy a '97 328iC with the power top. It seems to work fine but have heard that they can be problems. What should I be looking for or should I go with a manual top? Thanks.

I had a 97 328ic and the top needed to be adjusted a couple of times during the 2.5 years I had it. Sometimes it would need some help closing or would hit the cover when opening. My 99 M3c that I have had since Aug. also has the power top, but I have not had a problem with it and it seems to work better than the 97’s top. It has an integrated hand hold on the front, so it is easier to help it close (could have used it on the 97). If you have the hardtop, you will need to help it close the first time after having the top down for an extended period of time. It seems that some improvements to the top were made in the 98 and 99 model years.
