Help!!! Gas Pedal doesn't work (archive)

Can anyone tell me what is wrong with my car. I was driving and all of a sudden my gas pedal stops working. Usually it takes quite a bit of force to step on the gas but now its so soft and the car no longer revs or accelerates. Everything else seems to be working fine. The engine is fine because I can pop the hood and rev the car by pressing down on the wire that connects to the gas. but if I'm in the car and leave it in netrual and step on the gas nothing happens. Does something go loose with the pedal or something. Did anyone esle ever have this problem. How much is it going to cost to fix. Thanks for all your help
