I've been noticing lately that my 96 318i is suffering from a hesitation/chugging immediately after a cold start. (Cold engine, not cold temperatures.)

This problem only lasts for the first 20 or 30 feet, and then after that, the car is fine, even if it is turned off & restarted. The problem only comes back if it has not been running for a few hours or more.

When I try to drive away, I get little/no response right away, and then it lurches forward, and then no response again. Very erratic, but after you drive 20 or 30 feet the problem is completely gone.

Anyone know what this might be?

By the way, the O2 sensors (both) were changed about 18 months ago and spark plugs were changed during Inspection II about seven months ago.

TIA
