On our cars it is very hard to tell if the pump is dead w/o actually opening up the pump and looking at the impeller blades. One way to check is first by listening under the hood while running. You sometimes can hear a metal grinding sound (or like metal rubbing against smooth metal (very faintly), if you pull the throttle cables they should get faster and you may hear a knocking. This is an indication of the pump separating from the housing. The only other way is to start the car and when temp guage 1/2, turn car off and feel the top hose. If the top hose is cold, it is either the thermostat or pump.
