At least my local bmw shop quoted me $300 when I inquired about it. I have seen some leak-down testers available for around $100-$150 (all you need is a compressor) and I suspect that one could do it themselves, but I've put the subject off on my engine.Compression test shouldn't be that expensive (although it does take a little bit longer to remove each plug one at a time on the e36 engines.)
Cleaning out the carbon in the engine would entail some sort of injector/head cleaner and I think those services can run in the $100+- range?
