At least my local bmw shop quoted me $300 when I inquired about it. I have seen some leak-down testers available for around $100-$150 (all you need is a compressor) and I suspect that one could do it themselves, but I've put the subject off on my engine.

Compression test shouldn't be that expensive (although it does take a little bit longer to remove each plug one at a time on the e36 engines.)

Cleaning out the carbon in the engine would entail some sort of injector/head cleaner and I think those services can run in the $100+- range?

When I mean cleaning out the carbon, i don't mean
stick a carbon injector kit into the engine bottle
I mean seriously tear down the motor.

I was *THIS* close to spend 18,000 on a 460hp
turbo kit for my 95 M3. *THIS* close. seriously...

Compression test is less than 50$ if you can do it
yourself.
