I did the conversion onto my e36 318is
Although I started with the 2.5 M50 motor, 2 months later decided to upgrade to the M motor...as far as the Motor, the only difference is the crank, all the forged parts and bored down block (3.2 or 3.0)
I did this and used the existing 2.5 head.
Make sure you get the entire wiring harness.
If your car is EWS or not, make sure your DME(brain)and chip support it!! Also you might want to consider to upgrade your clutch along with clutch slave cylinder and new fluids.
The M3 clutch is slightly bigger but not much..
but the quality versus 325/318(same) clutch is much better.
Trust me, you will fry your old clutch in a month or less!!!DO IT AT THE TIME WHEN THE MOTOR IS OUT, SMARTER!!
Make sure you get the exhaust manifolds and proper intake/exhaust for efficient breathing and farting.
Depending which motor you get 3.0 or 3.2, you want to consider that 3.2 have a different wiring harness and might need to add more o2 sensors to your exhaust system or brain will to hell with idle.
I did it all the hardway...
switched heads because the 2.5 I overreved and bent all the valves,so I had to purchase a new head, later before putting the head in, decided to purchase the 3.2 motor. but the wiring harness was different, so swapped to a 3.0 with harness. but forgot about the brain was different and had to wait for an OBDI brain.
When It got in, the Chip was EWS, and my 318is (like all cheap four bangers) is non-EWS so I had to get another chip...at that time I got a performance chip...and the rest goes on.
A month later, I fried my 318is brakes and clutch
Too much power =) but cost me Too much ///Money =(
well worth it!
TOTAL DOWN TIME: 2 month on jackstands!!
I should have left the 2.5 block and just fixed the head!!!
