I've been doing it for years. 4cyl. VW's are really easy going up or down in almost any gear, but my 95 318is is nowhere near as easy. I get away with it mostly on the way down, i.e. when coming to a stop sign I'll just pop it into second. I haven't had much success at any rpm other than idle.
