Yes, they are abrasives, but they are superfine abrasives. (At least the ones recommended for swirls/etc--like 3M Hand Glaze.) It's not something you'd want to do every week, but just 1-2 times a year would not be a problem because any clearcoat removed would only be a microscopic amount.

Also, 3M Hand Glaze contains fillers that settle into the crevices of the swirl marks to reduce their appearance.


I don't understand why people talk about removing swirl marks with an abrasive substance. If you rub this gritty stuff on your paint, aren't you really just breaking down the paint and moving it around to cover in the swirls. In the long run won't this hurt your paint? It seems to me that detailing could really hurt one's paint job. I feel though I must be missing something, or everyone would not be doing this. Please explain this to me. Also are multiple coats of wax recommended?
