I think just about every BMW, if not every car, has this problem. It's due to an accumulation of microbes and mineral deposits in the ductwork.

But enough for the science lesson. There is a product designed especially for this. It's an aerosol spray, $20 a can at Car Care Specialties . Check the product listings under the manufacturer WURTH.

(For more detailed info about this problem, search on the E39 boards..it's been discussed a lot over there, along with explanations of where to spray the stuff. I think Lysol was recommended by several people, but I can hardly tolerate the smell of Lysol.)
