If you like it, go for it. I would like to add however, that all the negative qualities that you named about the E46 are based solely on it's looks, which is just a matter of personal taste. There are many that really like the new look.

I didn't see any neg. opinions on the E46 about it's mechanical capabilites/performance, but rather I saw a couple of comments that the MB isn't as good mechanically as the BMW 3 series. It seems to me that you're making this decision based on looks/styling.
