I didn't see any neg. opinions on the E46 about it's mechanical capabilites/performance, but rather I saw a couple of comments that the MB isn't as good mechanically as the BMW 3 series. It seems to me that you're making this decision based on looks/styling.

I agree, the E46 is a mechanically sound and near perfect performance wise. However, the new C class is almost on par with the E46 in those departments, and is far superior in styling IMHO. Thus if it's on par with the E46 for drivability, then styling aesthetics should be the deciding factor.
