I DONT KNOW ABOUT THE ONES IN THE US BUT THE EURO 323/328 BETWEEN JAN 95 & JULY 98 HAD ENGINE PROBLEMS.BMW USED NIKOSIL TO LINE THE ENGINE BLOCK AND THE PETROL EATS IT AWAY CAUSING LOW COMPRESSION. THEY CURED THE PROBLEM BY STARTING TO USE IRON LINED BLOCKS.
