My car is a 96' Euro M3 (3.0 ltr) coupe.

I used to hear this scratching/ticking sound only when in high revs in first gear. Usually it would occur when moving off from a junction. I thought it was something to so with the Vanos as they can be quite noisy.

Within the last two weeks the sound is present even when at idle. It increases in volume when I accelerate, steer sharply or if I lower the steering column. I am also experiencing some stiffness in the steering. My guess is that it is low fluid, but the p.s. resevouir is impossible to get to without removing bits of the air intake. The ticking sound could be the p.s. pump.
