question about stock head unit on 97 328is (archive)

I took out my stock radio head unit today to see if my homemade tool works and I noticed that there are two antenna attachments on the back of the unit. In my radio manual there is listed an "antenna socket" and a "connection for diversity antenna system". Does anyone know what this second antenna system is or what it does? Thanks.
