I've had the problem, and so have many others on the board. I got my E36 328i after my mother drove it for 2.5 years. She never drives fast and doesn't push the car hard AT ALL. However, I soon as I got it, I noticed that the gears kept slipping, even though it only had 50,000 miles. I had it checked out by several BMW mechanics and they said it was OK. After several months, however, this "slip" developed into stalling (in an automatic!). I got it checked out by more BMW mechanics (one of them is a family friend that owns Pacific BMW). Turns out, I had to replace the transmission... many others have had this problem. Don't know what it is, but the E36 auto. transmission must've been misdesigned or something... I don't know that much about transmissions, so I don't have a technical explanation... just what I noticed while reading this board and firsthand experience.
