Plastic skirts under front (archive)

The skirst/shrouds under the front/behind the spoiler of my 325i have been ripped pretty bad by Minnesota winters. I've got a couple questions on them, that I hope someone can shed some light on.

1. I assume they help with air flow (cooling) and dirt and probably damage protection on the underside. Does taking them off affect much? Do others of you have problems with them?

2. If a aftermarket (or M style) front spoiler/bumper cover is added, are these still used?

Thanks!
