My question about VANOS is not: "is it a bitchin high tech concept"? I know what it's SUPPOSED to do. I'm trying to find out what it actually does. I already know that it advances the intake cam 12.5 dgrees in midrange RPMs. That's swell. My question is: does it really help? What are the real-world practical results? Has anyone had a VANOS and non-VANOS 325i (E36/2.5L/M50). The automotive design world is full of alot of high-tech stuff (some folks might even say BS- imagin that!)- alot of it is of little real value and exists mostly to boost sales (latest gadget- more bells and whistles). I know that variable cam timing is awesome and probably the way of the future. Does anyone have REAL and PERSONAL knowledge of the ACTUAL performance and/or fuel consumption differences between VANOS and non-VANOS M50 motors? In the United States, our M50 motors are pretty sad: that motor looks to be able to make at least 40% more power in a stock non-EPA mode. I have an opportunity to buy a 1992 325i that I like, and I want to know if I should hold out for a later model with VANOS. Thanks, Kip.
