Most shocks fail because of oil leaking out past the seals.

In most cases, the oil leaks out very slowly, and they work just fine until the oil level in the shock gets too low.

Today, when putting on my new sway bars, I noticed that one of my rear shocks was much dirtier than the other. When I looked closer I noticed a white oil like substance on the shock. Is that shock oil? Do I need to replace the shock? I haven't noticed any problems when driving. I have Bilsten shocks on the car.

TIA,
Bob C.
