I made an intake and heat shield for my m3 this weekend... took me about an hour. The muffler shop mendrel bent a pipe and made it fit the filter perfectly as well as the airflow meter. its pretty cool. I paid 10 bucks for it and like 60 for the 8 inch filter. And then i made a heat shield out of some aluminum pieces. It looks really good and it sounds really good too. This would be the second custom intake i made already... one for my 325is and now for the m3. I had an m3 with the drop in filter and the baffles removed, but its no where near the sound nor performance of the big cone filter. the box is too restrictive. go for the ecis if you are not inclined to making your own intake.. i think its fun to do stuff like this, so thats why i went ahead and did it... hope that helps.
sorry, i dont know about the smog thing for california. it shouldnt be hard to slap your old box back on... just two nuts and two clips and it slides right out.
