what would make an exhaust REALLY LOUD? (archive)

My friend just got a 95 318is and the exhaust is REALLY REALLY LOUD! when we drove through the parking garage today it was setting of car alarms. It also has a tremendous amount of air flow coming out the exhaust pipe-enough to move my pant leg.

The really strange part is that he only has an exhaust tip....So it is not as if he has a loud, free flowing aftermarket exhaust. What could possibly make the stock exhaust so loud? Would a car with no catalytic converter sound like this?
