I've driven my 96 328 with the sport package 16's around the city for 4 years and have only 1 rim that has a good bend, but it doesn't leak yet. I just drive over the potholes really fast ;)

I am considering to install 17" rims with 225/45/17 tires. What are the chances of ruining them due to potholes and bad roads in Chicago? Should I get the 16" rims with 225/50/16 instead? I hear so much about bending the rims out of round due to potholes. I am fairly good at avoiding potholes on the freeways and city road, but I am pretty sure I will hit them later. I am really confused about getting the right type of tires and rims. Thanks you.
