Considering a 318ti as a commuter car. Thoughts?? (archive)

I am thinking about getting a '97 318ti as a commuter car. I have an X5 and want something else to use for the many miles I just found out I have to put on my car for the next few months.

I couldn't find any crash stats on this vehicle. I know BMW usually does a really good job with safety...anyone have any info on this vehicle??
