I have a '93 325is. Have had no problem with the Vanos. For the coolant level, the sensor is a float thing in the coolant overflow tank - it gets crudded up. You might be able to clean it, or need to replace it. cheap fix.

The other thing to watch on these cars is that the water pump has plastic impellers and with age can disintegrate. You should replace with a pump with metal impellers.
