Definately get the engine checked for damage.
Ham-fisted drivers have been know to over-rev the engines on downshifts. Expect at least a $3K head rebuild if this has happened. A full upper and lower engine rebuild will run closer to $8K.

That would *easily* account for the fire-sale pricing.
