strong fuel smell (archive)

I just bought a '95 318i that is in good shape yesterday from a local Volvo dealership. I noticed a general fuel stench around the outside of the car. The smell was the worst when I would go somewhere in the car and then open up the door to get out. It seemed as if fuel vapors were coming up from underneith the car. Anyway, I'm guessing that this is a fuel leak...is this a major safety issue and should I have the dealership pay for this to be fixed?
