Radio Won't Hold Stereo Tuning (archive)

The radio in my 1992 325i won't hold the stereo tuning. The "ST" indicator will periodically appear, accompanied by a cracking of the radio. Has anyone experienced this problem and what did you do to fix it?

I've already checked the antenna wiring and everything looks fine.
