one airbag goes off = replace all??? (archive)

So is it true that if any of the airbags in the car goes off, you need to replace ALL of them? My buddy has an e36 w/ side bags and the passenger side one went off. The body shop says they have to replace ALL 4 airbags, plus ALL sensors AND the SRS control module!! I think they're full of shit...side airbags are kinda useless anyway, just pop the trim back in and short some sensor so they stupid light will go off :) oh wait, can't do that...once a bag goes off the SRS keeps it in memory forever. unless there's a way to reset it...
