You can find a used M3 exhaust to put on your 328 for less than half the cost of an aftermarket exhaust. But the M3 is almost twice as heavy (the heavier it is, the HP it takes to move it) and not as great looking as most aftermarket, in my opinion. None of the aftermarket exhausts or the M3 will produce much additional HP without a CAI and an aftermarket chip to make the extra HP happen. For my 328 I went with the SuperSprint exhaust (group purchase for $478), the ECIS Intake with 9" K & N cone and heat shield ($179 group purchase), and the Conforti Shark Injector do-it-yourself chip re-programmer from Turner Motorsport ($399).

The ECIS has no problem with hydrolock as it sits in the upper engine compartment protected by its enveloping heat shield. The Dinan CAI for comparison is down low by the brake duct and members of this board have noted risk of sucking in water.

Don't mess with the flat panel K & N air filter inside the stock air box. This set up is less than 1 HP better than stock. Go with the K & N cone.

The Shark Injector is only a 5 min. do-it-yourself re-program. Very easy instructions and a definite improvement in performance.

Read the archives carefully before you consider more complex and labor expensive mods like cams, pulleys or underdrives. You may get just as much better handling and performance by attending a BMW Club driver school before messing with the guts of your engine. Good luck with your mods.

Is an M3 exhaust one of the best for power, or are there other aftermarket exhausts that will net more? And how difficult are installing exhausts?

Also, for people running CAI's, how much of a problem is hydrolock? And how difficult is the install and where is a place that sells a bunch of different ones, and do they still use the stock airbox/K&N filter.

How difficult is it to put it aftermarket chips (that remove the governor) and/or cams. How about pulleys, does anyone make lighter underdrive and crank pulleys for quicker power steering and less reciprocating mass?

Thanks, Peace.
