I'm gonna have to disagree: while I drive a 325i manual, which fits your requirements to be an "ultimate driving machine", I think that you are being unfair to exclude the auto or the 4 banger. Most of what makes a Bimmer so incredible is its handling, not its straightline performance. Any V8 American muscle car can outperform most BMWs as far as engines go, but nothing handles like a BMW, be it an auto or a stick, a 4 or a 6. Not wanting to start a flame war or anything, but to be the "Ultimate Driving Machine", i.e. a pure driver's car, I do not believe an E36 can be either a four cylinder or an automatic, or God forbid both! What are your thoughts?
